PH CONTROL SOLUTION FOR A SPECIALIST PAPER MILL PROCESS

The global pulp and paper industry has a total value of more than $350 million, and within this ultra-competitive sector manufacturers are under pressure to maintain product quality and consistency.

That was why, when the operator of a busy European paper mill had a requirement for a professional water-monitoring solution, they approached Chemitec to supply a trusted solution from its industry-leading instrument range.

The site was a paper mill, based in the Lucca Paper district in the Tuscany region of Italy, specialising in the production of special papers used for kitchen counter top wraps.

With an exacting specification to meet, the operator needed to precisely monitor the paper pulp’s pH value in order to achieve the desired colour for the finished product. With retailers looking for high levels of quality and consistency, the measurement reliability over time was an essential aspect of production.

Prior to approaching Chemitec, the producer had been monitoring pH levels by taking repeated measurements with a portable pH meter. However, this method was labour intensive and time consuming, so management wanted to upgrade to a fixed measuring system.

Chemitec, with 40 years’ experience providing instruments such as controllers, sensors and analysis systems to the pulp and paper sector, had a range of application-specific equipment to supply.

That was why, when the company’s product team paid a site visit to the plant, this long-held expertise meant they were able to ascertain the client’s unique requirements and recommend a dedicated solution.

Having completed a full assessment of the application, the Chemitec team specified its 46 Series control unit in combination with an S 401 pH electrode and S315 probe holder for immersion.
